The penguin that dreamed of an architect

The focus for the installation is the now defunct penguin pool at London Zoo, designed by Berthold Lubetkin in 1933. Lubetkin’s design was unique because the animals were no longer housed in an artificial reproduction of their natural surroundings but instead in an environment which had an emphasis on harmony and symmetry.
Due to a series of health problems caused by Lubetkin’s design, the penguins were moved to another enclosure in 2004, the pool now kept as a water feature and a reminder of this utopian architectural project.
